ON THE SHELF
BOOK DESIGN
There is something I find very satisfying about book design. It is a deeply immersive and detailed process that draws on multiple design skills. It is also one of the more durable, less ephemeral, things a designer can work on. By the time a finished product is reached, several skilled artists, tradespeople, and craftspeople have given it their talent and attention. But the most pleasing part for me, before reading a word, is taking a moment to see the book as a beautiful and whole artifact.

Consisting of 24-32, pages, this is the second Island Arts I designed. The publication is part brochure/part fundraising tool, presented in magazine format. Mailed quarterly to every resident on Vashon Island, it offers an overview of all that's happening at Vashon Center for the Arts. It also builds community with feature articles, generates ad income, and sparks interest in upcoming fundraising campaigns.

QUARTERLY MAGAZINE
IDEA BOOK (#2 of a series)-Imagination Workbook

The IDEA BOOK was originally developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is a collaboration between myself as designer (concept, layout & production)along with educators, students, and illustrators from the Greater Seattle Bureau of Fearless Ideas. It is intended to be a portable, screen-free way for young people to explore their imagination with a world of color, words, stories and mindfulness.

The cover was made from a presentation folder both for a durable outer protection but also so that cool interactive artifacts could be tucked away in the pockets. The Front pockets had a "story map" and emoji stickers that students could use to express their daily emotional state in the top right corner of each page.

The back pockets had a postcard with a writing prompt they could mail to us, and a piece of seed paper that would spout flowers when buried in soil so that kids could literally "grow" a poem.

WHAT TO READ IN THE RAIN
A Literary Dunbreak in an Otherwise Gray Day.

What to Read in the Rain is a perennial anthology in which writing Bureau of Fearless Ideas students shares a spine with writing by established local authors. This edition was subtitle “A Literary Sunbreak in an Otherwise Gray Day.”

Despite the reference to "an otherwise gray day" all the illustrations use only black and white.

THE CLASH–London Calling (Tribute Book)

This book is a tribute to The Clash album "London Calling." I challenged myself to find an original Creative Driver within the lyrics through which I'd then interpret the album into book form.

I've included a little less than half of the spreads that make up this tribute book. Take a look, and for best results, as you take in each page, listen to the corresponding song!
