IN 3-D
PACKAGING, SURFACE & INTERIOR
Designing in 3-D is a blast. It means thinking about visual perception and typographic hierarchy and how a thing is approached, experienced, and used. I love considering how something fills and contains space, what and how much is seen at any given angle, how it is put together structurally, and the ways that shape and line interact with dimension.
Here are some basic "things" I've had fun with: a sleeve, a bottle, and box, a vehicle, and a couple of rooms.

This cover for a 7-inch single is purely a work of DEVO Fan Fiction. This single does not exist, but if it did...

The "ribs" of the bomb shelter follow the edge of the vinyl when it’s in the sleeve. The inevitable faded ring caused by friction from the slightly thicker, rounded outer edge of the vinyl will work with (not against) the design.

The front cover borrows from Pop Surrealists like Mark Ryden and, of course, Mark Mothersbaugh) and deploys the theme of mutants and mutation central to the idea of De-evolution and mentioned in the lyrics of "Going Under".

The Gentleman IPA label has the illusion of a prom date Polaroid crudely taped to the bottle with masking tape. The concept is that a gentleman is defined by goodness of intention and authenticity of character, not by flash and affectation.

Actual masking tape isn’t scalable and deteriorates in water. Actual masking tape on a brown bottle is photographed then printed on the opaque "cold-glue" label. Each bottle in a six pack has a different interpretation of what it means to be a gentleman.

This is a surface cling design for Kraftwürst German Sausages food truck. Naturally it draws heavily from both Bauhaus and the band Kraftwerk. Unfortunately, like so many restaurant ventures, and this food truck was never realized past conceptualization.

The austere, government-funded building made the name Bureau of Fearless Ideas seem more official than was ever intended. The oversized logo was rotated to soften the branding and break the rigid grid of the mullions. This project prompted revelations about the 10-year-old brand limitations, ultimately leading to my company-wide brand refresh. (See LOGO & BRAND).

Seattle Housing Authority agreed to let this nonprofit writing and tutoring center occupy what was originally intended as office space on the ground floor of the new Hoa Mai Gardens Building in Yesler Terrace.

A few months later, the final touch came the space filled with children’s books, artwork, and students learning.

In the creation of a brand identity for a retail store, exterior sign execution is a key consideration.

I began a museum of pencil sharpeners!
