IN THE HAND
CARDS, BROCHURES, REPORTS, PAMPHLETS,
AND SUCH.
Something happens when you put an artifact of design into someone's hand. The second they hold it the sense of touch is added to the perceptive experience. As they read, the frontal lobe is engaged. Add a fold or a page to turn, and the brain's posterior parietal cortex is now chiming in, too! This all means that the viewer is forming a unique relationship with the images and information they are receiving - it has gone beyond the transfer of information; now it's a sensory experience.

This represented the first time VCA had announced a full season and a new "Bundle Discount" buying option. We presented this 28-page brochure as a "Special Issue" of VCA's familiar quarterly magazine, Island Arts.

Using a modular grid system with three different listing size options (each size in its own layer group), the page layout could be varied, accommodate 2-8 shows/page, and emphasize select shows.

Being VCA's first season brochure meant we could now list events by genre and type rather than solely chronologically—however, we did still include a season-by-date spread.

VCA GALLERY
Exhibition Catalog

24-page catalog for an exhibition of work by the late, world-renowned artist Akio Takamori at the VCA Gallery. The unique 6"x6" size began as a solution to budgetary and supply-chain issues. The final product felt special in the visitor's hands, and Vicky Takamori, Akio's widow who curated the exhibit, was delighted by them.

Annual Appeals often go out during the holiday season. Breaking with the tri-fold letter, I designed a card that provided some cheer to a serious ask. This card was the first in a trilogy of retro-style "Holiday Gift Giving Guides" equating a donation to a symbolic gift for a student.

In 2020 Annual Appeal, like the feel of the season, was more subdued. It was a time to be more down to earth and straight forward. Like previous years, it was mailed as a greeting card, but now printed in deep reds on earthy kraft paper. Instead of being clever, the tone was genuine and heartfelt.

VARIOUS YEAR-END APPEALS
Presented as a Greeting Card

Fearless Idea's annual fundraising gala is known for being a unique and fun event. From the moment attendees receive their invite, they know this gala will be like no other. This year, the theme was Navigate the Future, so the outside of the invite looked like an antique atlas, with a marbled paper cover.

When the recipient opens the invite, it unfolds (accordion style) to reveal a playful map, and they are introduced to the "Event Hero" - a sailing ship flying the "BFI" flag.

In 2021, People Eating and Giving was once again an online affair. But a Hero Graphic was created: an octopus able to adapt to anything life threw his way. A limited run print invite was produced.

ANNUAL REPORT

This succinct Annual Report tells the organization's story over the past year through statistics and numbers. As suggested by the graphic, the central theme for 2019-20 was "Flexibility."

REVERSABLE PAMPHLET

Summer Workshops-2018
With two locations offering simultaneous Summer Writing Workshops, I set about to design a reversible workshop pamphlet. It can be read to the center spread, beginning from either cover. Here is a 15 second video.

PRINT AD, PERFORMANCE PROGRAM, POSTER, & FESTIVAL SCHEDULE

The design of this festival brochure allowed the SketchFest to maximize a tight budget and created four marketing assets within a single printed artifact! #1: The front cover served as festival flyer, and when slid into the pages of The Stranger arts newspaper, it eliminated need for print ads.

Asset #2: Unfolded once in folio, it is a program with names, logos, performers, and company bios. A few hundred with withheld and handed to the audience as they entered each show in the festival.

Assets #4: The back, a simple, one-color infographic was the festival schedule and guide. It showed theatre company, venue, date, time and ticket info.
